It’s the penultimate round of the BMKR 2023 Junior Rotax Championship. It’s a new tyre round and we head into the weekend confident as kart and driver are on form and feeling strong.
In qualifying we were classified with the fastest lap and start the first race of the weekend on the front row in second. We didn’t make a great start and got pushed wide in the first couple of corners loosing four places. Jacob raced hard and finished the race in 3rd with the fastest lap.
For the pre-final, we lost a few places again at the start and again drove hard to make the best of our race. We ended the pre-final in 4th position, which will be my starting position for the grand final.
In the grand final the race had two false starts and then on the third a red-flag. We eventually got racing on the 4th attempt and had a really bad start getting pushed onto the grass and loosing up to eight places. Jacob drove really well making up places lap by lap. Toward the end of the race he made a clean over-take for 3rd position and the following corner the driver he overtook decided to do a late lunge which result in him clipping Jacob’s kart, getting stuck on his rear bumper and then proceeding to driving over the top of Jacob’s kart. This wrecked both of their races and pushed Jacob from 3rd down to 9th. A completely pointless move.
After the race the race stewards called us to the stewards room as they were un-happy with the accident. After all the video footage had been viewed and statements from the drivers they deemed the driver responsible for the accident was to be disqualified from the race, not just for the crash but for their dangerous actions after the incident. Although we are pleased that they took action it didn’t help us in one of our strongest weekends yet at Bayford. We did however, for the third time out of four this weekend got fastest lap of the race.
