It’s the final round of the winter championship and our third race weekend in a row, in three weeks we’ve been down to Forest Edge, up to Fulbeck and now down to Lydd, and we are pleased to report its a dry race weekend.
Sunday race day consists of the usual warm up, qualifying, two heat races and a grand final. The kart and driver passed scrutineering first thing and after drivers briefing we head out to the pre-grid for warm up and qualifying.
Qualifying wen’t well, we put our kart on the front row role in pole position with fastest lap of the session and the only driver to brake the 38 second range.
Heat 1, Lost out in the first corner dropping to 2nd place, pushed hard throughout the race and after a hard battle with kart 46 eventually made it past to take the win and claim fastest lap… this time the only driver in the 37 second range.
Heat 2, Perfect start into the first corner keeping the lead and then gapped second place pulling out a gap lap by lap. Crossed the line in first place taking the win and another fastest lap…. again the only driver in the 37 second range.
Grand final, started in pole, got pushed out in the first corner but managed to hold on to second place. Fought hard to make up the time, catching kart 46 by two tenths every lap. I was soon on his rear bumper and almost half a second quicker than him. His defensive driving soon turned to desperation for him as he was swerving all over the track, pushing me off whenever we were side by side. He had spent the whole weekend being beaten by me so did everything he could to win and unfortunately resulting in dirty driving tactics, something this driver is well know for.
I was 0.018’s behind starting a new lap, got a great exit in the last corner and was side by side with him on the main straight, he then purposefully drove into me, pitching me up in the air and into the barrier, he must be so proud to have to drive like that to win.
By the time I got running we were last and a lap behind. We kept our head down and pushed onto the end of the race which was only another 3 laps.
Kart 46 was disqualified but that didn’t help our race.
We had the backing from the whole paddock, so many people came up to us to say what a great weekend we were having and how fast and well we drove in the final and the tactics of kart 46 were appalling and desperate.
We finished the weekend securing 1st place in the championship and taking driver of the day.
