It’s round 4 of the NKC 2024 championship and the start of the Northern tour kicking of at Whilton Mill.
We’ve done some testing at Whilton Mill before but this is our first race weekend there so alot to learn. The weekend consisted of Friday & Saturday practice with three race heats and a final on Sunday.
We spent Friday and Saturday testing, adjusting our kart set-up, gearing, jetting and tyre pressures until we found a good set-up that worked well. In each of the sessions we were hitting consistent and improving lap times so couldn’t ask for more. Whilton Mill is a brutal track and we are enjoying the challenge.
NKC has random grids so there was no qualifying on Sunday. We headed to the pre-grid for our first race starting in 14th position. The weather was good and the track nice and fast with all the drivers enjoying the new chicane added before the main start finish straight.
Race one start went well and the grid was very competitive. We are competing against some big teams and local drivers who know the circuit inside out but that didn’t put us off as we pushed hard and ended the race in 12th place out of 30 drivers, making up two positions.
Race two we were starting at the back of the grid in 29th position. We made an excellent start and by the first corner had made up 5 places, we raced hard, held our own and kept pushing throughout the race, we finished the race in 13th, making up 16 places.
Race 3 we started on the second row in 3rd position. Again kept out of trouble at the start keeping our position and then raced hard against some very quick drivers. Unfortunately through the race we lost three positions finishing the race in 6th.
The points earned in the three heats was enough to make the A-Final…. again, which is 4 out of 4 which is an amazing achievement in our first year in a national championship. Our starting position was 21st.
A-Final we made a good start, holding our position, again raced hard, constantly swapping places and battling. We finish the race in 19th position after a drop nose penalty, which ruined our progress and meant we only ended up making two positions.
We scored a total of 181 points this weekend and are now 22nd in the championship out of 97 drivers.
